March Meeting

What a great February meeting we had with the Fire on the Mountain Cloggers. We had a floor stomping great time watching them, wondering where in the world do they get that kind of energy!
We are all looking forward to our March meeting.   For all new comers, our March meeting will be held at the Elks Club, located on Seguin St. across from the Chamber of Commerce/Civic Center. The meeting room will open at 6:00 PM for some friendly refreshments and fellowship. The meeting will start at 7:00. We’ll have the 3rd Generation group play and variety of German, American, Irish and country.
We continue to look for a volunteer to hold the chair position for the 4th of July Parade and the Comal County Fair Parade and the Annual Christmas Party. We have many volunteers to help with all the events, just need someone to sign the dotted line as Event Chair.
Maskenball is coming on Feb 26th.   Be sure to get your tickets at the door if not already in possession. This year’s event is great food and fun with entertainment sure to “Polka” your shoes off.
Annual Dues need to be paid. See Almut please and get these finalized.
Your Executive Board approved finances to help support Gemischter Choir trip to the State event in Dallas.
Spring is upon us. Your Board is beginning plans for Folkfest and the May Annual picnic in Landa Park.
          See you Tuesday evening.    Chris

Spaßzeit für alle!

(Fun Time for All!)

At the February meeting, the Elks Lodge dance floor came alive as 14 dancers from San Antonio's renowned ensemble, Fire on the Mountain Cloggers, entertained members and guests of the German American Society. Started 26 years ago by Rusty and Linda Carolin, this 26 member dancing troupe performs 80 to 90 times yearly throughout Texas, the nation, and internationally. The goal of this clogging and percussive dance team is to preserve and to generate appreciation for traditional Appalachian style dancing.

The March meeting will have a different type of toe-tapping going on.  "The Third Generation" (known to us as The Baker Kids) will once again be sharing their talents with us.      Although they have entertained us several times, these kids are getting pretty well-known around the state, too, playing at many different festivals and celebrations.  Maybe someday we'll be able to say, "We knew them way back when they first got started."  Be sure to come out and hear these talented kids.

Adult German Classes

On January 6 our club sponsored the first of 10 consecutive German classes for adults at Cross Lutheran Church.  Instructor Debbie Pickett was elated to have 33 very interested students in attendance.  She is planning classes in conversational German with an emphasis on a relaxed atmosphere.  Interest in the class was very high with 10 to 12 students getting turned away due to a lack of space. Hopefully, they will wait for next January's class.

Steuben Society

Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit

As we start another year it is time to pay 2011 dues.  Dues are $20.00, so see Richard Odorfer, our Treasurer, to pay your dues.  I would like to encourage other members of the German American Society to join the Steuben Society.  We want to show other Units our German Heritage by having a large and successful Unit.  In 2011 we are planning on working with the community to teach the youth of New Braunfels about the contributions of German Immigrants in settling Texas. We call our Unit “the Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit #1845”.  We work with the German American Society to promote German Heritage in Texas. We are currently on a membership drive and would like to invite members of the German American Society to join. The New Braunfels German American Society does an excellent job promoting the German Heritage within Texas but this is a way we can inform other individuals throughout the United States about OUR German Heritage.
Please see Richard Odorfer or Ron Evans for Membership information.
